Povestea incepe prin prezentarea unei tinere frumoase si inocente Maria De La Cruz Lopez (Maricruz) care locuieste alaturi de bunici ei intr-o coliba pe malul mari. Intr-o zi deoarece nu aveau ce sa manance se duce la o mosie sa fure ceva de mancare pentru a pune pe masa bunicilor iar atunci il intalneste pe Octavio de la Reguera un tanar rasfatat si arogant. Cand il intalneste tanara se indragosteste pe loc de el iar acesta v-a profita de acest lucru si se v-a juca cu sentimentele ei.
Deoarece familia lui Octavio nu vroiau sa ii dea partea de mostenire acesta decide sa se razbune pe familia lui si se insoara cu "mizerabila de pe plaja" . Fata accepta si dupa ce se marita cu acesta v-a suferi umilinte din partea familiei in special din partea mamei vitrege. Cu timpul Octavio se v-a indragosti de fata insa v-a fi prea tarziu .
